Make this Mother’s Day unlike any other: reach for the sky and experience the empowerment of new learning from a variety of pilots. Alexandria Field is hosting a weekend of free ground school programs. If you always wanted to learn to fly or never gave flying a second thought this weekend is a motivational experience.

Not just for Moms. The program includes: a traditional Pilot Safety Seminar, a Panel Discussion on aviation career opportunities, a local author Book Signing, a sample Introductory Ground lesson, a sample Aviation Camp lesson, a sample Leaders Take Flight® lesson, Photo Opportunities with pilots and their planes, and an Airfield Tour.

Moyer Aviation Fly-outs message:

Our recent flight to Lancaster has been postponed until this Friday, April 11th at 6:00pm. The weather just wasn't good enough for us to make the trip last Friday. This will be a good opportunity to go on the trip if you could not go before. Please call and reconfirm that you are going on the trip so we can get an estimate of how many people are going. Please call the office to sign up or email us at the return address below.

Also, in May we are planning on going to two(2) breakfasts. The first breakfast is to Lockhaven, Pennsylvania (KLHV). This flight will be on Sunday May 4th at 8:00am and it lasts till about 12:30pm. The price for the breakfast is $6.00 per person for adults and $3.00 for children under 10.

The next trip we are planning is a short hop up to Mount Pocono Airport on Sunday May 25th for their annual Aviation Day. We will be leaving at 8:00am and the breakfast lasts till about 1:00pm. There will also be Young Eagle flights sponsored by the EAA.

Fly-out message from Moyer Aviation:

Due to our recent bad luck in weather, we are postponing the fly-out to Orange County (KMGJ). We will be having this trip after the fly-out dinner that is planned on April 4th, 2008 to Lancaster (KLNS).

We encourage Student Pilots to go on these trips as well as renters. Flight Instructors are available to assist renters or provide a lesson for students. If you need an instructor, feel free to call us to make one available to you. The aircraft is also available for rent so schedule today! There may also be extra seats available for passengers. Please let us know and we will accommodate as best as possible.

Our most recent flight to Ocean City, New Jersey had a great turnout. We had about 10 aircraft and approximately 18 people. It was a beautiful day for flying and everyone enjoyed the scenery. Whether you flew to the Atlantic coast and down the shoreline (great sight-seeing) or through Philadelphia airspace (talking to controllers), each was a pleasant experience.

Our next flight is going to be a dinner flight and is scheduled for April 4th, 2008 at 6:00pm, weather permitting. We’ll be heading to Lancaster, Pennsylvania (KLNS). Flight instructors will be available for this trip. This flight is a great opportunity to do some night flying and practice communications as you go through controlled airspace. Once again, instructors will be available.

So please come join us for our next Fly-Out to Lancaseter (KLNS). Everyone is invited. There is a sign up sheet at Moyer Aviation. Please call if you have any questions. Also, line service will be available to ready the airplanes (preheat, fuel, window cleaning, etc.).

If weather is pending, we may have to change our destination or cancel altogether. Weather dates will be made available.

safety, aviation education and flying camaraderie. All levels of pilots,

Speaker: AOPA's Bruce Landsberg, Air Safety Foundation Executive Director
Everyone makes mistakes. In fact, when it comes to flying, most pilots seem
to make the same mistakes and they make them repeatedly. Fortunately,
thousands of pilots want to break that cycle, so it's no wonder the AOPA Air
Safety Foundation's seminar "Top 5 Mistakes Pilots Make" has been setting
attendance records. A February 20th presentation in Portland, Ore., drew an
audience of 530 pilots. "Top 5 Mistakes Pilots Make" helps pilots understand
and avoid general aviation's biggest killers. This record-breaking seminar
is being presented free of charge at dozens of locations across the United
States. The Kathy Jaffe Safety Seminar is honored to present this program.
About Our Speaker:
Bruce Landsberg became the executive director of the AOPA Air Safety
Foundation in May 1992. He is responsible for guiding Foundation activities
including program development, publications, Internet education, special
safety research projects, and donor cultivation. He writes the monthly
"Safety Pilot" column in AOPA Pilot magazine and is a regular contributor to
Flight Training magazine. Prior to becoming ASF's executive director,
Landsberg was Product Marketing Manager for FlightSafety International in
Wichita, Kan., specializing in transition and instrument training programs
for high performance singles, light twins and turboprops, and for airline
pilot recruitment programs. Prior to that, he was Manager for Cessna
Aircraft Company's Air Age education department involved in fleet sales of
aircraft to colleges and universities. Landsberg serves on many committees
representing general aviation safety interests in the FAA, National Weather
Service and NASA. He is also on an advisory board to a major aviation
university. A former U.S. Air Force officer, Landsberg holds a B.A. in
Psychology and a Master's degree in Industrial Technology from the
University of Maryland. He has logged more than 6,000 hours and holds the
ATP, single-engine, multiengine, and instrument flight instructor
certificates. He has been an AOPA member for more than 35 years.

We had a very productive (and fun!) business/planning meeting last night. Claudia, thanks for hosting! These are some of the ideas we discussed:

Mary will contact Alexandria airport about them hosting a safety seminar
Ways to find and reach out to women pilots and students: Explorers, Girl Scouts, students at local airports, getting mailing lists
Gabriela will contact AOPA about their schedule for placing a Penn-Jersey ad on their print magazines and getting on their e-calendar
Ordering t-shirts and ordering/creating stationary with our logo
Certified Flyers has offered to give a demo of the Avidyne display on their full-motion Cirrus simulator. Once we decide on a date, possibly October or November, Gabriela will coordinate with them to see if they’re available.
Hosting an Open House, possibly during the spring

The Spring 2006 New York-New Jersey Section Meeting will be held at Newark Liberty International Airport’s historic Building 1, Newark, NJ. A block of rooms are being held at the Newark Int'l Airport Marriott hotel on the airport property to accommodate our overnight guests. Make your reservations directly through the hotel at 973-623-0006. A special room rate of $109 for double or single occupancy is available until April 8th. By Car
Building 1 – Building 1 is on Conrad off Brewster Rd near the Continental hangar in the North Area. From I-78 use Exit 58A and I-95 use Exit

14. Follow signs to Port Newark and North Area. Turn right just before the traffic signal at the brown sign: "Terminals, Parking, North Area, South Area". Proceed to the "T" and turn right at the STOP on Brewster Rd. Go 1/2 mile and turn left on Conrad just past Bldg 70 (on the left). Proceed to Building 1 on the left. Park in the visitors area in front of the building.

Permission has been obtained for flying into Newark-Liberty International Airport and we expect no landing fees. Free parking will be
available at Port Authority locations. VFR and IFR approaches will be allowed. VFR arrivals can expect reporting point instructions from the tower on 127.85. Arrivals and departures MUST be planned within the time frames indicated below.
Friday Arrival: after 9:00 p.m.
Saturday Arrival: before 8 a.m. Sunday Departure: unrestricted

Career Day Expo at Newark

This year's Career Expo at Newark is shaping up to be an interesting event. The theme is "The Many Faces of Security". It is being held for urban 7th & 8th graders and will involve upwards of 2500 students over the two days of May 10th & 11th. They are setting up Bldg 79 to be similar to a terminal complete with TSA screeners. (They will not be doing real screening.) All the various facets of a terminal will be represented including emergency equipment and the agricultural sniffing canines. Also on hand will be multiple aircraft including a C5, 777 & crew, State Police helicopter, etc.

Our involvement is several fold. We need people who are willing to fly into Newark (all fees waived) and have their planes on static display. It's a great opportunity, lots of fun and having EWR in your logbook is very cool for us GA types. Are there any takers out there? If so, please let me know no later than March 31.

We will have a table in Bldg 79 where we will have a CD on continuous play showing places you can fly or simply shots from the air. If anyone has any such digital pictures I'd love to have them. I'll be happy to put the CD together. It would also be nice to have someone at the table during the event. I'm sure I'll be there for most of it but I'd love some company. Any takers on this one?

I'm also in the process of ordering from AOPA a small pamphlet which was to be a handout at our table. However, the decision today was not to hand out any paper at the event but to provide it ahead of time for the student buses. That way it will not be allowed off the bus until they return to the school and won't end up in places we wouldn't want it at the airport!!

If anyone else has any easy to implement ideas please let me know.

Finally, for those of you who might be wondering how we got involved in this, it is simple. The Port Authority said they'd be happy to help with the NY/NJ Section event....would we help them with Career Expo? Enough said.

We are going to ILG (New Castle, Delaware) this month. It is 67 NM SW of N51 (Solberg). You can down load more information at http://www.airnav.com/airport/KILG along with approach plates and an airport diagram. You can obtain a taxi-way diagram at the AOPA web site.

It is always a good idea to pick up flight following on your way up and back. You can reach them (New York Approach) on 127.6 or 132.8 or just ask for a hand off from ground or the tower prior to departure. From MJX (Toms River) the approach frequency is 120.25 (Mc Guire) and from MGJ Orange County the approach frequency is 132.75 (New York) The Philadelphia Approach control is on 118.35

This is a Class Delta airport so you will need to contact clearance delivery on 119.95 prior to moving for departure; to obtain a departure clearance.

Section Planning Meeting

Our chapter will be hosting the April Section Meeting
scheduled at Newark International Airport (EWR) on April
28th and April 29th. There will be a Section Planning
Meeting at Mary’s house in on Thursday, February 23rd, at
7:00 PM. Please let me know as soon as possible whether or
not you will be able to attend. Mary’s going to order pizza
once we know how many will be there

Community Connection Opportunities

For as young as this chapter is, we already received several requests for participation with the community :
· Headset donations are being requested for CAP
· Airplane quilt raffle is set for September 2006
· Museum of Women Pilots is holding a fund-raiser Carnival Cruise
· Cigar Box Soaring Contest In May 2006
· ”Senior Summer School” at Chelsea Assisted Living Home with Aviation as the theme

April 28th and 29th, 2006
Our chapter will be hosting the April Section Meeting scheduled at EWR [Newark International Airport] April 28th and April 29th. Events include flying into EWR, meeting at the original EWR Passenger Terminal from pre-1957, tower tours, etc..

May 17th and 18th, 2006
Our chapter will be participating in Career Day to be held at EWR [Newark International Airport]. Events include flying into EWR, using our planes as static displays, judging the essay contest (essays written by students on the topic of "The many faces of airport security"), acting as escorts and ambassadors for visitors.

We are going to N30 (Cherry Ridge Airport) this month. It is 60 NM WNW of N51 (Solberg). You can download more information at http://www.airnav.com/airport/N30 along with approach plates and an airport diagram. You can obtain a taxi way diagram at the AOPA web site.

It is always a good idea to pick up flight following on your way up and back. You can reach them (New York Approach) on 127.6 or 132.8 or just ask for a hand off from ground or the tower prior to departure. From MJX (Toms River) the approach frequency is 120.25 (Mc Guire) and from MGJ Orange County the approach frequency is 132.75 (New York) The Wilkes Barre Approach control is on 124.5

This is a very nice and homey airport. We will be eating at the restaurant on the field. It’s called the Airport Café and its phone number is (570) 253-5517. The FBO is Enger Aviation and its phone number is (570) 253-5833. For Penn-Jersey 99s: Arrival time is approximately 11:30 AM

Flyouts

The Penn-Jersey 99s Chapter flyouts coincide with MAPA’s (Mid-Atlantic Pilots Association) monthly flyouts. All MAPA flights are VFR only and are generally the 2nd Saturday of the month, with the rain date the following Saturday. If both are found not to be VFR then the flyout is cancelled for that month. Below is the schedule of MAPA flyouts.

Penn-Jersey 99s, as the chapter name indicates, come from both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We have decided to have rotating locations and rotating dates for our Chapter Meetings as a trial for the first quarter of 2006.
